Running the Biei Healthy Half Marathon - A Scenic Adventure in Hokkaido

Capturing the whole Half Marathon in 5 minutes  >>>  Biei Healthy Half Marathon

Why the Biei Healthy Half Marathon

As a dynamic woman who loves travel and sports, I’m always looking for new adventures that keep me active and inspired. Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Biei Healthy Half Marathon in Biei, Hokkaido - Japan — a race that combines stunning landscapes, a welcoming local atmosphere, and a course that keeps you on your toes!

If you’re looking for a unique running experience in Japan, this race should be on your list. Here’s why.

Biei: A Picturesque Town on the "Healthy Line"

Biei is famous across Japan for its rolling hills, vibrant flower fields, and breathtaking views of the Tokachi Mountain Range. But did you know it’s also located on what’s called the "Healthy Line"?

This term comes from the fact that many of the world’s longevity hotspots (like Sardinia and Okinawa) lie along the same latitude. Biei sits right on this line, making it the perfect place for a marathon that promotes health, wellness, and vitality—which is exactly what this event is all about!

The Biei Healthy Marathon attracts thousands of runners, from locals to visitors across Japan. While it’s not an international race, the warm, community-driven vibe makes it a truly special experience.

Race Day: A Scenic & Challenging Course

Getting to the Start Line

  • Shuttle buses were available from JR Biei Station, the Community Center, and other key points to the Sports Ground (the finish line).
  • For the Half Marathon (21.097km), we were transported from the Sports Ground to the starting line near the famous Blue Pond—an iconic Hokkaido landmark.

The Shirogane Shirakaba Kaido Course

The route was a mix of downhill stretches, rolling hills, and some tough climbs, offering both a physical challenge and incredible scenery.

  • First 9KM: A Gentle Descent
The race began in the Shirogane Birke Forest, with a smooth downhill run toward Biei’s town center. The crisp Hokkaido air and panoramic views made this section a joy.
  • The Infamous "Heart-Breaking Hill" (10KM Mark)
Just when I was settling into a rhythm, the course threw a 36m elevation climb—nicknamed "Heart-Breaking Hill" for good reason! It was tough, but the sense of accomplishment after conquering it was unbeatable.
  • Another Uphill Challenge (13KM Mark)
After catching my breath, the course had one more 1.2KM uphill stretch near San-ai no Oka Observatory Park. The reward? Stunning views of Biei’s patchwork fields and distant mountains.

Despite the climbs, the refreshing breeze, clean air, and cheering volunteers at every water station kept me motivated.

Why This Race is Perfect for Active Women

  1. Scenic & Inspiring Route – Running through Biei’s postcard-perfect landscapes is an experience unlike any other.
  2. Friendly, Local Atmosphere – While there weren’t many foreign runners, the warmth of the volunteers and fellow participants made it feel welcoming.
  3. A Manageable Challenge – The mix of downhill and uphill sections keeps it interesting without being overwhelming.
  4. Health & Longevity Theme – What better place to run a race than on the "Healthy Line"?

Final Thoughts: A Race Worth Traveling For

The Biei Healthy Half Marathon was more than just a race—it was a celebration of movement, nature, and community. If you’re looking for a unique, scenic, and uplifting running event, I highly recommend adding this to your list.
