Capturing Lightning in a Bottle: My 2025 World Masters Games Journey

As a vibrant woman in my 60s, I believe some adventures are beautifully fleeting – meant to be seized in their moment, not recreated. That’s exactly what the 2025 World Masters Games (雙北世界壯年運動會) in Taiwan was for me: a unique, unrepeatable chapter in my active life. I raced the Standard Distance Triathlon and Aquathlon at Mei Hua Lake, Yilan – an experience defined by this place, this time. Future Games will dazzle elsewhere, but THIS was ours!

The Stage: A Snapshot of Yilan, 2025

📍A Moment in Time

- Getting There: A scenic 2-hour drive from Taipei Airport (Taoyuan), winding into Yilan’s lush countryside.

- The Vibe: Rural but charming—perfect for nature lovers! Rural tranquility. Quaint, quiet… and punctuated by the glorious chaos of a local night market - Luodong Night Market! We fueled up on iconic Taiwanese street food like stinky tofu, icy bubble tea, and crispy scallion pancakes.

The Races: Our Unique Challenge

Over two intense days, the Sprint Triathlon, Olympic Triathlon, and Aquathlon unfolded on a stage that won’t be set the same way again:

🏊 The Swim: Mei Hua Lake’s Embrace (For Better or Worse!)

- The Reality Check: Dark green, limited visibility water. A distinct, almost "thick" feel unique to this lake on those days. Was it pristine? No. Was it our authentic challenge? Absolutely!

- Why It Mattered: It taught adaptability. Future lakes or seas will test us differently, but conquering Mei Hua’s murk in 2025? That’s OUR badge of honor.

🚴♀️ The Bike & 🏃♀️ The Run: Courses Etched in Memory

- Transition Zone: That playground – simple, functional, ours

- Cycling Route:

Hebin Road U-turn at the iconic Lanyang Bridge Back via Meilin Road/Dapi Road.*

Smooth tarmac, regulated traffic to provide smooth and safe race course, a specific ribbon of road we raced only here, only then.

- Running Route: Looping Mei Hua Lake. Humid, shaded paths – a specific kind of fatigue under those Taiwanese skies.

The Distances: Our 2025 Battleground

Event        Swim    Bike Run
Sprint Triathlon 750m (1 loop)  20km (1 loop)  5km (2 loops)
Aquathlon       750m (1 loop)  -- 5km (2 loops)
Olympic Triathlon   1.5km (2 loops) 40km (2 loops) 10km (4 loops)

The Takeaway: Why THIS Moment Shone

The 2025 Games weren't just races; they were a vibrant, time-capsule experience. That lake swim? A unique test of grit. That post-race night market feast? Pure, local joy. While future World Masters Games will sparkle in new cities with fresh challenges, nothing will replicate the magic of pushing our limits together in Yilan, Taiwan, in 2025.
